Chapter 16: New Base I

“This building has been abandoned for about a year now, ever since the previous tenants left the city,” Marone explained as he led me to the entrance of a small warehouse. “We’ve been trying to rent it out, but nobody’s been biting, probably because we’re so close to the Crimson Covenant’s territory.”

I studied the exterior of the building for a moment, before sweeping my gaze over the area we were in. We weren’t exactly in the poorest area of the outer city— in fact, we weren’t even inside of a slum. Instead, we were in an area where there were actually quite a few normal-sized buildings mixed alongside a lot of wooden huts and houses.

It was not comparable to the architecture of the inner city, of course. It reminded me more of Velmond— the parts where the Blood Swords was headquartered. Except, this place was actually populated.

Although, we didn’t see that many folks wandering the streets on the way here, for some reason.

I spotted a child peeking out of his hut, eyeing us curiously, before his mother yanked him back inside. I turned back towards Marone as he continued his explanation.

“Since we’re close to the origin of the demon attack, there’s still a lot of stray demons wandering the area. So I highly doubt anyone’s going to want to stay here any time soon. And that’s the only reason why we’re renting it out to you on a discount, got it?”

The burly man harrumphed as he crossed his arms across the chest. I scratched the cheek of my mask.

“Right…”

I stared at him, before looking at his comrade who accompanied him here on this tour for us. Hudson— the illusion [Mage] who had tried to steal from Nicky when she first arrived at Albus. Neither man looked enthused to be here, but they had no choice.

When I had asked Ashton to offer me some help, he agreed by telling me that I could have the Copper Wolves at my disposal. Specifically, Marone and his men, including Hudson.

When they had heard about this, they were outraged. But they couldn’t say anything against the Flayer himself. Besides, by that point, Ashton had already informed the leader of the Copper Wolves about this— and they had apparently taken no issue with this, especially after hearing about how Marone and Hudson had gone and caused not just me trouble, but also the Iron Maw.

Anyway, I had requested for a base of operations towards the southern quadrant of the outer city, and the Copper Wolves obliged, offering me this warehouse for a relatively cheap price. And I knew I wasn’t being scammed, since I had spoken to Marlowe before leaving the Golden Gryphon, confirming that I was given an extremely discounted price to stay at this location.

He also briefly questioned me as to how I had befriended Ashton— but I brushed it off, simply saying that I had helped out during the demon invasion, not wanting to delve into the intricate details of what had happened.
